The bicycle's inventor got fined for it in 1842 — then got forgotten for 50 years
A Scottish blacksmith may have built the first pedal-driven bicycle in 1839 — and someone on one very similar got fined for a hit-and-run three years later. The catch: almost none of it can actually be proven.
